suggestions please~What is REALLY COOL BEACH HOTEL ON MAUI?
To understand Maui, you need to know that Wailea/Makena, Ka'anapali and Kapalua were planned communities built from scratch (there were no existing towns where they are located) to support tourism, so the beaches are lined with nice resorts and they are all excellent with beautiful tropical gardens. Ka'anapali was first, then Wailea which is more upscale. Kihei is the ';real'; town adjacent to Wailea, and where all the condos are; I would not recommend it unless you are under a tight budget and need to stay in a condo.

The resort district of Wailea / Makena will be more expensive than the Ka'anapali area which has been around since the 1970's and is also larger. Check out the Hyatt at Ka'anapali which is the nicest resort in that area, but I've seen under $300/night at the moment due to the recession, ocean view will of course be much more. Ka'anapali is also next to the great shopping and historical town of Lahaina. The ';next tier'; of beachfront hotels (Sheraton, Westin) are excellent too but similar and I would select based on available deals and price. If you are trying to keep to a certain budget of $$$, the best buy right now is the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. This was the original resort in Ka'anapali, definitely needs an overhaul but is still fairly glamorous and on the best part of Ka'anapali Beach. Service is excellent. The possible negative: because of the lower price and beach location a lot of families and kids stay here if that is of concern to you.

If you want something totally different, and want to stay ';away from it all'; even if just for a night or two, check out the Hana Kai condotel in Hana. Not the seamless luxury (or price!) of the famous Hotel Hana Maui, but your balcony will look over paradise...
